One of the beauties of Dell machines is that they offer wide configurability options; and therefore we figured that for our cheap all-in-one computer review, the Dell OptiPlex GX620 would be a good desktop to assess.
This compact all in one runs on Windows XP Professional, so if you’re partial to this OS instead of say Windows 8, then good for you. This has a 17-inch flat-panel monitor. No, not a touch screen monitor but given how easy it is to mix-n-match with Dell devices, that is always an option. On the inside it features a Pentium 4 650 3.4GHz processor, an Intel 945G chipset 2 GB DDR2 RAM that can be upgraded to 4GB, 2 MB L2 cache, and a 160GB SATA hard drive that can be upgraded to 250GB. An Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 tells you that this machine not all about work, you can play a game or two on it. In case you’re wondering why didn’t Dell provision for a higher-end processor through a later upgrade, the answer to that is that this is a small form factor, designed to save you space.
The CPU is tucked behind the display, that’s the space-saving angle to this form factor. With the more powerful processors, things heat up pretty fast and heat dissipation is not easy with this form factor. Also, you’re reading this Dell OptiPlex GX620 cheap all-in-one computer review, because you want a budget computer. Eight USB 2.0 ports would suffice for the connectivity needs of most users. Two of these ports are in the front. You could also ask if Dell would have served its customers better by providing another PCI graphics card slot, but it isn’t there and you in all probability are not going to do high-end graphics work. A DVD drive is there, so you can play multimedia on the OptiPlex GX620. Connection to the internet is via an integrated Broadcom 5751 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN. The machine arrives with a mouse and keyboard included, there is not going to be a waiting period for you to test out this Dell offering.
The black and grey paneling appears classy and muted and will do a good job of hiding fingerprints and stains till you decide to take a cloth and wipe it. During the tests in our cheap all in one computer review we found that the OptiPlex handled regular computing work and ran programs with ease. If reliability and solid, non-flashy computing device is your requirement then this cheap AIO will fulfill your requirements quite admirably. Like all Dell machines, the GX620 promises to be a rugged machine as well. With little or no care, it will run even in the most demanding environments.
Our Dell Optiplex Gx620 MT review leads us to conclude that this machine is a cheap all in one that is cheap only in terms of its price. Otherwise this is a strong performer and for its price of around $250, it is a perfect fit for those that are looking for an inexpensive desktop computer.
